Overview

Part IB is the second year of your course. You take a total of five Part IB papers. Links to detailed information on all these papers can be found on this page.

There is a single examination classification for Part IB.

The standard Part IB (ex-Option A) Language Examination consists of Paper B1 (assessed as a full paper), Paper B2 (assessed as 66% of a full paper) and Oral Examination B (assessed as 33% of a full paper). The sum of the marks of these language examinations is the equivalent of two papers.

The standard Part IB (ex-Option B) Language Examination consists of Paper B3 (assessed as 60% of a full paper) and Paper Language through Audio-Visual Media (assessed as 40% of a full paper).

If both your first-year languages were post A-level ones, you take:

  • Paper B3 in each of these languages (translation into the foreign language and Language through Audio-Visual Media);
  • Three scheduled papers chosen from a wide range of literary, linguistic, and historical options.

If, on the other hand, one of your first-year languages was studied from scratch, you take:

  • Paper B1, B2, and Oral B in the language previously offered as Option A
  • At least one scheduled paper relating to that language
  • EITHER Two other scheduled papers
    OR
  • One other scheduled paper and paper B3 in the language previously offered as Option B
