DoS Info Pack

Info Pack for Directors of Studies in MML and Linguistics


Please notify Department Secretaries immediately of any changes in students' circumstances, e.g. change of Tripos or language.

All Directors of Studies will receive a pack of information via UMS. The documents are also available to download from Moodle (here). The pack will include:

  • Important Faculty Meeting Dates
  • List of Directors of Studies in MML
  • List of Directors of Studies in Linguistics
  • Library tour flyers
  • Language Centre leaflets
  • Notice relating to the use of Moodle in 2016-17
  • Notice relating to the application for Optional Dissertation titles in 2016-17
  • Notices from the Department of German and Dutch
  • Notices from the Department of Slavonic Studies
  • Notice relating to the recording of lectures

Timetable of Start of Term Events:

This is available in PDF format or as an Excel download. Please check carefully for information regarding supervision arrangements, language classes and important introductory meetings for all students.

Certificate and Diploma/CHUCOL

The Certificate/Diploma in Modern Languages and the Certificate in Humanities Computing for Languages (CHUCOL) are suspended indefinitely.

Language Class Lists (MML)

Language class lists will be emailed to students during the first week of term. Lists will also be displayed on Department Noticeboards. Students should contact the relevant Department Secretary to discuss any changes to these lists. Directors of Studies will not receive the lists by email. Department Secretaries will send the first version of the lists only and will not circulate updated lists. Further information relating to the language classes in German and Slavonic Studies will be circulated with the paper version of the DoS Info Pack. Please do not email Department Secretaries asking for these lists - they will arrive before the first language class takes place.

Lecture listings/online timetable

The online lecture listings can now be viewed at:, from 21 September 2016 onwards. You will also find a quick link from the front page of the Faculty website. 

Students borrowing papers from other faculties

Directors of Studies of students wishing to borrow papers from other Faculties into MML Part II and Linguistics Tripos Parts IIA and IIB are advised to contact the relevant course convenors, or the Director of Studies from the relevant Tripos from the students' colleges as soon as possible to confirm supervision arrangements.

Student Deadlines

Part IIB Linguistics students

  • Proposed title forms for final year dissertation to be submitted to the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics by no later than 3pm on Friday 21 October 2016.

Part IB MML students

  • Following the Year Abroad meeting for all MML IA students that took place at the end of Easter 2016, two compulsory meetings will be held for IB students, the first on 25 October 2016 and the second in early February 2017.
  • Students who wish to apply for an Erasmus study place or for a British Council Assistantship must return their forms indicating their choices by 5pm on 20 January 2017. All other students must return a completed form outlining their Year Abroad plans by 5 pm on 3 March 2017. Both Erasmus and non-Erasmus students must return a risk assessment form for each planned placement by 3 March 2017. All Erasmus students must confirm their final plans by 5pm on 9 June 2017. Part II MML students

  • The Year Abroad Project must be submitted by no later than 4pm on Friday 7 October 2016.
  • Students returning from their year abroad should hand in their attendance form and report form to YA Office by Friday 14 October 2016.
  • Students wishing to apply to submit an Optional Dissertation should complete the online application via Moodle (see info in pack) and submit an approval signature form to the Faculty Office by Friday 21 October 2016.
