Department of French
French Scheduled papers for Part II
New Part II scheduled papers from 2012/2013
In addition to the French language papers and the Year Abroad Project, you must offer three scheduled papers at Part II (or two papers plus an Optional Dissertation).
The scheduled papers and the dissertation(s) may all relate to one language area or may be spread over different language areas. It is always advisable to take at least one scheduled paper with components in the same language as your language papers because the books that you read will feed into your language work, helping your fluency in reading and writing, and extending your vocabulary.
The French Department offers Part II students all the literary and linguistic options available at Part IB, and more:
- Fr 3: French literature, thought, and history, before 1300.
- Fr4: Occitan literature, thought, and history before 1356.<.li>
- Fr 6: French literature, thought, and history, from 1510 to 1622.
- Fr 7: French literature, thought, and history, from 1594 to 1700.
- Fr 8: French literature, thought, and history, from 1690 to 1799.
- Fr 9: French literature, thought, and history, from 1789 to 1898.
- Fr 10: French literature, visual culture, thought, and history, from 1890 to 1958.
- Fr 11: Literature, visual culture, thought, and history in the French-speaking world since 1945.
- Fr 12: A special subject in French culture: Early modern thought.
- Fr 13: The French language: variation and change.
Fr 5: French literature, thought, and history, from 1300 to 1510 is suspended for 2011/2012; however, Part II students may offer an Optional Dissertation on a topic related to this paper.
Comparative Studies papers - which cover languages and topics beyond departmental boundaries - are also available. Students may take one comparative paper of the two papers CS 5 and CS 6, but there is no such restriction in respect of papers CS 1 and CS 3.
All MML Tripos Part II Papers (including the Comparative options) are listed in Schedule II.
Finally in Part II, students may also 'borrow' up two papers from other Triposes, as listed in Schedule D.
