Andrew Counter works on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French literature and culture, with a particular interest in the interrelation of sexuality and the family. His previous research addressed the topic of inheritance in nineteenth-century French literature, law and cultural politics, and his book Inheritance in Nineteenth-Century French Culture: Wealth, Knowledge and the Family is forthcoming in 2010. His current research focuses on representations of sexuality in nineteenth-century fiction, from Astolphe de Custine in the 1820s to Émile Zola at the fin de siècle. He has published articles on Balzac, Maupassant, Zola and women's writing.
