The German section is a leading institution in the field of German studies and has always achieved excellent results in successive national research assessment exercises, as well as sharing in the outstanding rating awarded to the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics in the last Teaching Quality Assessment.

Who was Fritz Kittel? A German Railway Worker Decides, 1933–2022’: A Reading and Discussion with Esther Dischereit

The German Section had the honour of hosting the distinguished German writer Esther Dischereit in Cambridge on Monday 5 February 2024 for a rich and engaging presentation about her recent exhibition ‘Who was Fritz Kittel? A German Railway Worker Decides, 1933–2022’. This special event was co-organized by Jonny Ball and Doriane Zerka as the annual Lent-term collaboration between the German Graduate Research Seminar and Section Research Colloquium. The impressive turnout, which included students and staff from across the University, as well as members of the general public from Cambridge and beyond, was testament to the continued relevance and significance of Dischereit’s work.

Diversity in German Studies - CPD Workshop series aimed at secondary teachers of German

This series of workshops will focus on the theme of diversity as a key point of contact between A-level German teaching, where it features both as a highlighted aspect of contemporary society and as a theme in prescribed literary works and films, and current work in German at University level, where it represents a core principle in curriculum development and broader institutional priorities.
