Nicholas Boyle's German Literature: a Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2008) deals specifically with the literature of Germany since the late Middle Ages. It was not possible in the space available to deal with earlier literature, or with the German-language literatures of Austria and Switzerland. These topics are covered on this site in the following three documents:

i) The Empire, the Princes, and the Towns (to 1517)
ii) The Literature of Austria and the Hapsburg Empire
iii) The Literature of German-speaking Switzerland

It is expected that these three sections will be included in the German edition of the book.
