AHRC Competition 2012 | Applying to Modern & Medieval Languages
In 2009 the AHRC changed the way in which it offered funding to postgraduate students in the arts and humanities. The University holds a 'Block Grant' of awards from the AHRC, and will run a competition for these places. Students intending to study at Cambridge no longer make an application to the AHRC, but apply for AHRC by means of the application form for study at Cambridge (tick the box on the form to say that you wish to be considered for AHRC funding). Departments/Faculties will nominate students to the University for an award.
MML will assess every application and shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete the AHRC application form (link to it below). Please read information on AHRC funding at the Board of Graduate Studies webpages: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/funding/ahrc/index.html.
(As part of the AHRC selection process, we are additionally selecting one PhD candidate starting in 2012/13 for a prestigious Wolfson Foundation award. The award covers full fees and maintenance starting at £15,000 p.a. year, and includes a generous Research Allowance. No application is required: eligible candidates will be considered automatically.)
The process and timetable for students wishing to apply to Modern & Medieval Languages (MML) is as follows:

This is the deadline for receipt of applications. Please ensure your on-line application is made by this date at the very latest. Detail on making an application and links to the application process can be found here: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/prospec/apply/index.html. It is important that you send in your supporting documentation as soon as possible after you have applied for admission online, because your application will not be looked at until this is received.
The AHRC application form is available at: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/funding/ahrc/apply.html. This form has a section for the Research Proposal.
The Research Statement should cover the following points:
MPhil applications
- the course or programme of study you will be undertaking, including your thesis topic;
- your preparation and previous experience;
- how the course will prepare you for doctoral study or otherwise contribute to your long-term career aims.
PhD applications
- the research problem or question and why it matters in terms of the research context;
- your reasons and purposes for undertaking this project;
- your preparation and previous experience;
- the approach to be taken and how sources are to be used;
- an outline timetable for completion;
- your training needs;
- any ethical issues related to your research project.
If you have already begun your doctoral study, please remember to refer to the research you have undertaken to date. If you are applying for doctoral funding for a third time, you must also include justification for this further application.
The AHRC application form should be emailed to the Graduate Administrator at MML, Siobhán Carew, to reach her no later than 13 January 2012.
Current PhD students
Please complete the AHRC application form (see link above), and deliver it, with two references to the Graduate Office by 13 January 2012. Please refer to information above for PhD applicants.
