*FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES IN ITALIAN STUDIES FOR OCTOBER 2018 ENTRY*

Sykes Postgraduate Research Studentships in Italian (Masters and PhD)

Sykes postgraduate research studentships in Italian are available to outstanding candidates applying for courses starting in the academic year 2018/19. As in previous years, a number of studentships will be available at both Masters (MPhil) and PhD level, for one year and three years of funding, respectively. The studentships are funded by a generous donation from the Keith Sykes Fund.

At Masters (MPhil) level, there are courses with Italian pathways: European, Latin American and Comparative Literature and Cultures; Theoretical and Applied Linguistics; Film and Screen Studies.

At PhD level, Italian at Cambridge supports a broad, interdisciplinary range of research under the general heading of Italian Studies.

Studentships will cover fees up to the standard UK / EU level and maintenance costs, either wholly or in ‘mosaic-funding’ combination with other grants. The precise number and distribution of awards between PhD and MPhil level will depend on the calibre of the candidates for each course of study and the availability of other sources of funding. It is a condition of application that candidates apply for all other Cambridge grants for which they are eligible (http://www.mml.cam.ac.uk/graduates/applying). All candidates with a predominant research interest in Italian will automatically be considered for a Sykes Studentship, subject to this condition.

Candidates should apply online for the relevant course in the normal way: http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/. All shortlisted candidates will be interviewed.

Before applying, all potential candidates are strongly encouraged to contact their potential supervisor and/or the current postgraduate coordinator in Italian: Prof Robert Gordon (rscg1@cam.ac.uk)

NOTE ON DEADLINES: Application deadlines vary:

- for US candidates also applying for Gates scholarships, the deadline falls on 11 October 2017;

- for most other non-UK / non-EU candidates, the deadline falls on 6 December 2017;

- for most UK / EU candidates, the deadline falls on 4 January 2018 (http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/finance/funding)

NOTE ON COLLEGES: All students at Cambridge are affiliated to a Department and also to a college of the University. In cases of co-funding by a college, successful candidates may be required to move to a designated college to take up the Studentships; but at this stage, they should freely indicate a college preference if they wish, as requested on the application system. College affiliations of the Professors and Lecturers in Italian are indicated on the following webpage: http://www.mml.cam.ac.uk/italian/research-summary

NOTE ON BREXIT: The Studentships are intended to cover fees and maintenance costs for UK / EU students as currently defined. Cambridge University has undertaken to make every effort to maintain this level of fees throughout their course of study for all EU PhD students, unless new UK law at the point of Brexit expressly disallows it. See the following on this and for FAQs about Brexit and Cambridge: http://www.eu.admin.cam.ac.uk/
