Resources for students

Students have access to the vast collection of the University Library, most of which is on open access shelves, and there is an extensive linguistics section in the library of the Modern and Medieval Languages Faculty. Colleges usually have some basic linguistics texts, and can be encouraged to obtain others. The Department has a library of working papers and research reports. Both the University Library and the older college libraries have collections of manuscripts and early printed books which contain a rich stock of texts on grammar and linguistics from the twelfth century on.

Within the Department there is a well-equipped phonetics laboratory, including a sound-treated room for making recordings and running experiments, a network of Unix workstations with speech analysis and synthesis software, and electropalatography for monitoring tongue movement during speech. The work of the laboratory is supported by a full-time technician. All students following courses in experimental phonetics use the laboratory.

General computing facilities, for instance for word-processing and statistical analysis, are provided by the University Computing Service both centrally and in a personal workstation facility in the basement of the Oriental Studies building near the Linguistics Department. The Modern and Medieval Languages Faculty also has computing support. A Graduate Studies Centre is located above the Modern and Medieval Languages Library in the Raised Faculty Building; this provides some working space for graduate students of the Faculty. Colleges also have computing facilities.

All students receive an e-mail (electronic mail) address, and they should check their inbox regularly as information from the Department is normally sent by e-mail.
