Linguistics beyond the Department
Cambridge is a leading centre for research into the Language Sciences. There are outstanding researchers not only in the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics itself, but also in a variety of institutions beyond the Department and the Faculty. A recent questionnaire tells us that approximately 140 members of University staff, housed in all the five Schools of the University, are interested in the Language Sciences. To further enhance communication and integration between all those researchers that may or may not already be collaborating together, the University has granted funding for the Cambridge Language Sciences Strategic Research Initiative.
Collaborations between members of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics and other researchers in the University already exist. The Deparment is currently working with colleagues in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages, the Language Centre, the Computer Laboratory, the Engineering Department, the Faculties of Classics, English, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, the Department of Experimental Psychology and the Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit of the Medical Research Council.
Many members of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics also have associations with a variety of research and higher education institutions in Europe, the United States, South America and Asia, thereby providing staff and students with an important and dense network of researchers in the Language Sciences all over the world.
