SPA2: Translation from Spanish and Oral A

SpA2 comprises two elements which are taught and assessed separately, but the marks for which are combined to create one mark at the end of the year: Translation from Spanish to English (worth 66.6%) and Oral exam (worth 33.3%). Both of these skills form part of the fast-paced and exciting ab initio Spanish course.

Aims and objectives: 

Translation work will support the language acquisition skills acquired in SpA1; extracts from literary and essayistic works allow you to see complex grammar in action, encounter new vocabulary and explore differences in language use and style. The texts you encounter will increase your knowledge of Hispanic culture, including the four literature texts that you will be studying for SpA3. The course will also help you gain an understanding of translation as process and product.

Course materials: 

This paper is taught through supervision only and supervisors will provide their own materials. For general language acquisition, students should use resources provided for the accompanying paper SpA1.

Teaching and learning: 

Translation is taught in four supervisions during Lent term. In each supervision you should expect to work on a) an extract from each of the four literary texts taught in SpA3 (since translation of such a passage is part of the SpA3 exam); b) a passage whose content is not related to other aspects of the ab initio course (typically taken from a past SpA2 examination).

Assessment: 

SpA2 translation is assessed by a 2-hour examination in which you will translate two contrasting passages, previously unseen, from Spanish to English.
