Catalan students and staff celebrate Sant Jordi!

On Friday, 22nd of April, Fitzwilliam college opened its doors to a big celebration of Saint George (Sant Jordi in Catalan) which started with a literary act in which Catalan students and other Catalan speakers living in Cambridge read poems, extracts of novels and short stories. Afterwards we had a book exchange event in which the attendants brought one of their favourite books to be exchanged during the evening. We also gave out Catalan books donated by the University of Alacant in Spain.

The event was accompanied by moscatell wine from Valencia and roses for all the attendants.

After the literary event, the celebration continued with a big Formal Hall, in which Catalan speakers and students of Catalan, seated around the table all mixed up, shared long conversations and laugher. It was a convivial event that brought two cultures and two languages together while celebrating the World Book Day and the patron saint of Catalonia and England.

Dr Geoffrey Walker and visiting fellows Dr.  Biel Sansano (Fitzwilliam College) and Professor Rosanna Cantavella (Clare Hall) accompanied us during the whole celebration, making it even more special.

You can see the pictures of the celebration on the slideshow below.
