SPBO: Spanish Oral

This paper is available for the academic year 2023-24.

 

This paper aims to help you develop further your oral skills in Spanish through systematic weekly practice. You will work with authentic texts and other materials, mostly taken from the press or other media. In the supervision, you will be expected to express your views and react to those of others. The Language with Oral Component supervision provides an excellent opportunity for you to practise your spoken Spanish in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Improving your grammatical accuracy and expanding your vocabulary are also important goals of this paper.

Aims and objectives: 

If you complete the set work and participate actively in the supervision, by the end of the year you will / will be able to:

  • Understand authentic texts from the Spanish-language press.
  • Express your views on matters of general interest and current affairs with a high level of grammatical accuracy and lexical precision.
  • Comment on and react to the opinions expressed by others.
  • Summarize the content of a passage or press article
  • Have some familiarity with current affairs in the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Accurately pronounce Spanish phonemes.
Course materials: 

All course materials will be provided by your supervisor.

Teaching and learning: 

Teaching for this paper takes the form of one weekly one-hour supervision.

Assessment: 

This paper is assessed by means of an oral exam, the Oral B (advanced level). The exam itself lasts for 10-12 minutes. You will need to arrive 15 minutes prior to the time of your exam. You will have 15 minutes to prepare a passage on which the exam will be based. At the exam itself you will be asked/expected to:

  • Read aloud a few lines from the passage
  • Summarize the content of the passage
  • Engage in discussion with the examiners on the subject matter of the passage. This involves expressing your views and showing the ability to analyse the ideas of the passage.
