About:

Dr Liana Giannakopoulou has taught Modern Greek and Comparative Literature at King's College London and is currently teaching Modern Greek Literature in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages of the University of Cambridge.  Her work so far has culminated in two books: The Power of Pygmalion. Ancient Greek Sculpture in Modern Greek Poetry (Peter Lang 2007) explores how poets shape their artistic identity in relation to Ancient Greek sculpture. Her discussion unfolds in a comparative context including German Romanticism, the work of Rodin, Victorian reception of Greek antiquity, the ruin motif, the sensual and sexual dimension of sculpture, and issues of national identity and tradition. In The Parthenon in Poetry. An Anthology (in Greek, published by the Hellenic Historical and Literary Archive in 2009) she has conducted extensive research on the presence of this monument in poetry from antiquity to today. Her most recent publication is on the influence of Pindar's Odes and the relevance of Pindar's reception in the work of the Greek Surrealist Nikos Engonopoulos. She is also co-editing a selection of papers presented at the international conference held in Cambridge: 'From Kornaros to Kazantzakis: Language, Culture, Society and History in Crete'.
