Colleagues and friends of the Spanish and Portuguese Section will be deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Erica Segre after a long illness.

Erica, who was a lecturer and Fellow of Trinity College, contributed generously to the work of the Section, as the organizer of inspiring seminars and exhibitions on Latin American visual arts, film and literature, as a galvanizing lecturer on our undergraduate and MPhil courses, as a beloved PhD supervisor, and active contributor to the life of the Section.

Erica was one of the foremost international specialists on Mexican visual culture, especially of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her book Intersected Identities (2007) is testament to the wide range of her interests combined with unparalleled and detailed knowledge of Mexican and Latin American arts -- from costumbrista iconography, graphic art of the 30s, urban film of the 40s, intersections of archaeology and visual arts, through to contemporary photography.

She continued to publish actively and heroically through her illness, recently bringing out a landmark edited collection of essays on México Noir (2020) -- following on from a previous collection Ghosts of the Revolution (2013) -- and generously contributing her own work to various other publications. She was also prolific as an innovative and celebrated translator of Italian literature and science, together with her husband Simon Carnell.

Erica will be greatly missed by her friends, colleagues, students and the wider academic community. Section staff send their deepest sympathy to Erica's family.
