Isabelle McNeill specialises in French and transnational-French cinema and film theory, with a particular interest in questions of memory, history and place. Her book Memory and the Moving Image: French Film in the Digital Era (Edinburgh University Press) was published in paperback in 2012. Her writing on cinema includes articles on Jean-Luc Godard, Agnès Varda and Yamina Benguigui, and addresses a range of issues relating to cultural memory, urban space, belonging and travel. Her current research is for a book on representations of Paris in cinema, with a particular focus on architecture and perspective.
Isabelle is Philomathia Fellow in French at Trinity Hall and Affiliated Lecturer in the Department of French. She regularly supervises Mphil and Phd students’ research in film theory and European film. Doctoral dissertation topics she has supervised include ‘slow cinema’, Maghrebi-French cinema and representations of the self in film.
Isabelle also actively particates in the wider promotion of film culture through her work with the Cambridge Film Trust, of which she is a co-founder and trustee. The Cambridge Film Trust is a charity that runs the Cambridge Film Festival, along with a programme of year-round events and other acivities across the UK as part of Film Hub Central East.
