My research:

My doctoral research sets out to trace a morpho-syntactic profile of the dialect of Bari, spoken in the South-East of Italy. Over recent years, linguists have shown great interest for the enormous linguistic diversity found among the dialects of Italy, direct descendants of spoken Latin with their discrete linguistic systems comparable to that of any other natural language. My research describes and analyses this understudied Italo-Romance variety through a selection of the most salient aspects of the clausal, nominal and verbal domains, in order to undertake cross-linguistic comparison with other early and modern Italo-Romance dialects and other (non-)standard Romance varieties. To this end, I have collected linguistic data through fieldwork with informants of different ages and social backgrounds. These first-hand collected data are systematically compared with the existing 19th- and 20th-century (non-)specialist literature available on Barese to highlight historical language changes. Particular attention is given to how Barese encodes ‘discourse-oriented’ information by means of specific syntactic operations.
