Building Films: Conversations with Brazilian Filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho

25 November 2017, 2 - 7pm (symposium programme & booking)

The symposium is in English and is free and open to the public. Please register here by 23 November, 2017.

Internationally acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker, Kleber Mendonça Filho will participate in a half-day symposium on his work, involving Brazilian film scholars, Maite Conde (Cambridge), Stephanie Dennison (Leeds), Lúcia Nagib (Reading) and Tiago de Luca (Warwick).

Born in the Northeast of Brazil, Mendonça Filho’s films have recorded the changing landscape of his hometown Recife, focusing on the effects of property development and global capitalism. His work registers anxieties and historical conflicts beneath local and global transformations. The building of both characters and places in his films offer a unique insight into the regional and national history that contributes an original and exciting addition to Brazilian and world cinema.

In this symposium Mendonça Filho will discuss his new untitled film project, in progress, which deals with the home in which he grew up. Stephanie Dennison, Tiago de Luca and Lúcia Nagib will give presentations on intimacy and cordiality, class and class conflict, and the politics of horizontality and verticality as articulated in the work of Kleber Mendonça Filho, reflecting on questions surrounding Brazilian nationhood and film. A round table, moderated by Joanna Page will be followed by a Q and A with the audience.
