Cambridge Polish Studies and Polish Waves on Cambridge 105 invite you to a special "Kinoteka" screening of Jan Komasa's 2014 film Warsaw '44 (Miasto 44) featuring a discussion with the director. The film tells the tragic story of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 against the German Nazi Occupation.

Jan Komasa is an acclaimed young Polish film director and screenwriter. His 2011 film Suicide Room (Sala samobójców) won various prestigious film awards in Poland.

You can read more about the film at Culture.pl:

"Warsaw entered its fifth year under German occupation in August 1944 with hopes for its final liberation. The Warsaw Uprising became the most intense and tragic of the revolts organised against the Germans in occupied Europe. In two months of fighting and mass murder, about 17,000 insurgents and over 200,000 civilians were killed. The Nazis destroyed nearly 90 percent of the city, leaving Warsaw a sea of ruins by January 1945.

'We want to show the Warsaw Uprising to the world' - says Jan Komasa, who wrote and directed the film. The directors's wish is to 'give the Warsaw Uprising its deserved place in world-wide consciousness'. The authors of the film describe it as 'a universal story of youth, love, courage and sacrifice, with special effects by Peter Jackson's and Christopher Nolan's collaborators'. The cast includes Józef Pawłowski, Zofia Wichłacz, Anna Próchniak, Tomasz Schuhardt, Maurycy Popiel, Antoni Królikowski, Grzegorz Daukszewicz and Jan Kowalewski."
