Become Heroes of Our Time!

Cambridge Slavonic Studies Outreach Event

Since 2016 the Slavonic Studies Section at the University of Cambridge has hosted a popular, free Outreach Day for secondary school students in Years 11 and 12. The event is playfully entitled ‘Become a Hero of Our Time’ after Mikhail Lermontov’s classic novel A Hero of Our Time (Герой нашего времени, 1839-41), which is a familiar companion of many first-year Cambridge students in our community.

This year, on 4 July 2020, we will be holding the event at Trinity College, Cambridge. It will feature Russian language taster sessions and informal seminars in literature, film and culture -- all led by Cambridge Slavonic Studies staff.

'Year after year we continue to see increasing numbers of applications and of students in Russian and Slavonic Studies at Cambridge,' explains Dr Rory Finnin, University Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Ukrainian Studies. 'Joining our community is to embark on an intellectual adventure that will distinguish you for the rest of your life. It is also to join the ranks of a highly employable group of scholars who forge rewarding careers in such diverse fields as journalism, law, politics, and diplomacy.'

To participate in the Outreach Day, please contact Romaine Marks, Section Secretary, at slavonic@mml.cam.ac.uk before 12 June 2020.

The University of Cambridge ranks at the top of the UK University Subject Tables for Russian and East European Studies compiled by The Complete University Guide.
