Please note that the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics only accepts students for the PhD who have already completed an MA or MPhil degree in a relevant field with a mark of distinction.

One of the most important consideration in applying for a PhD course is the availability of a suitable supervisor for the proposed dissertation project. The PhD is a research degree with no taught elements, and the student's principal contact is with the supervisor. For this reason, we advise all potential applicants to contact potential supervisors with a draft of their research proposal in advance of submitting an application.
The Slavonic Studies Section has particular expertise in the fields of Pre-Modern East Slavic culture; Polish, Russian and Ukrainian Literatures of the 19th and 20th centuries; Nationalism Studies; Film and Visual Culture; Memory Studies; and Sensory History.

Application process
All applications must be made via the applicant portal available on the Postgraduate Admissions Office website.
No guarantees of admission can be made by any member of staff or by the Section/Faculty. Once you have applied and submitted the necessary supporting documents, your application will be considered by the Faculty's admissions committee and Degree Committee. Offers of admission are processed via the central Postgraduate Admissions Office.
