Research:

I am currently working on Castilian romances of chivalry for my PhD dissertation. My research focuses on three concepts in the development of this genre during the era of the printing press: rewriting, sequels, and cycles. In particular, I study two of the most popular cycles of the sixteenth century, the Amadís de Gaula and Espejo de príncipes y caballeros, from the perspectives of narratology and history of the book. Scholars have frequently established a radical difference between the manuscript era of the Middle Ages and the print era, based on the material changes derived from the invention of the printing press. However, Castilian romances of chivalry originated during the Middle Ages. I aim to consider how the genre remained strongly linked to the manuscript writing culture. Rewriting, the production sequels, and the formation cycles were practices that originated in the manuscript era and survived in the genre despite the material changes introduced by the printing press. This project intends to account for the diachronic evolution of the genre; whilst rethinking the impact of the printing press on the narrative of the genre.
