Current Research:
I am researching the presentation of the British in 19th-century Portuguese literature, and how authors use British figures to re-negotiate Portuguese national identity in this problematic period. My work focusses on the novels of Júlio Dinis, and his attempts to engage a reader on both an emotional and intellectual level, through his playful and surprisingly sophisticated negotiation of national types and happily-ever-after paradigms.
