Dr Claire White in Newly-Published Volume for Degas Exhibition

Degas and the Laundress

Claire White is a contributor to the newly-published volume accompanying the current exhibition on Edgar Degas at The Cleveland Museum of Art (8 October 2023-January 14 2024).

Britany Salsbury's exhibition catalogue, Degas and the Laundress: Women, Work, and Impressionism (Yale University Press, 2023), explores the significance of the artist's laundress works within broader debates about labour, gender, and urban life. Claire White's chapter, 'The Stench of the People: On the Mania for Émile Zola's L'Assommoir', delves into the scandal that this groundbreaking novel about a Parisian laundress provoked, and the immense popularity of its adaptations to stage.
