We are delighted to announce that the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics has received the Athena Swan Bronze award in recognition of its commitment to advancing gender equality for all of its staff and students. The award is for five years (until July 2028).

An Athena Swan award is forward-looking: it represents an ongoing commitment to improving gender equality, and so a Bronze award is just the beginning! As part of the award, the Faculty has committed to a five-year Action Plan with clear goals to improve equality in areas where it is not yet reflected in our data and in the results of the surveys of staff and students undertaken during preparation of our submission. We will be publishing information about our submission and the Action Plan before the start of next term. The implementation of the Action Plan will be overseen by the EDI committee, with buy-in from all of the Faculty's governance. 

We would like to thank all of the staff and students who provided valuable input, feedback and oversight in the process leading up to submission of our Bronze application. Particular thanks are due to: Prof Jenny Mander, Chair of the EDI committee, for overseeing the application over the past four years; Rachel Plunkett, April McIntyre and Sam Oliver, former Faculty and Deputy Faculty managers for their crucial role in gathering data and supporting the application; Prof Ianthi Tsimpli for taking the senior lead and working closely with the Chair of EDI on the submission; members of the EDI committee who acted as the review team; all the current Professional Services Staff who helped compile data required for the submission; and the University's EDI team for their invaluable advice and support in the process.
