We offer a range of events and outreach initiatives to support prospective students, our widening participation aims and school language teaching. Our outreach programme aims to encourage school students to explore new languages and cultures, and to inspire them to continue studying languages to GCSE, to A level and in higher education.

Open Days

Our annual Faculty Open Day in March/April provides prospective students with important information about the subjects we offer as well as applications and admissions. It offers students the chance to experience sample lectures and to meet current MMLL staff and students.

We're delighted to be taking part in the University of Cambridge Virtual Open Days this July and September. The Virtual Open Days will take place from 5-18 July, and 13-26 September 2021. Booking is now open for the July Open Days.

As part of the Virtual Open Days, you will find lots of information and resources on our Open Days webpages, including talks, course films, sample lectures, suggested reading and resources, and frequently asked questions.

In addition to pre-recorded resources, we will be running a live virtual Modern and Medieval Languages Q&A session between 4:00-5:00 pm on Friday 9 July, featuring a panel of staff and current students, led by our Director of Outreach and School Liaison, Dr Stuart Davis.

Taster Events

Taster Days

Students in Years 11 and 12 are invited to join the Slavonic Studies Section for a virtual taster event on Saturday 10 July 2021, 11:00-2:00pm. This event is free but please register in advance. Click here for the booking link and for more details about this event.

Subject Masterclasses

Subject Masterclasses offer Y12 students an opportunity to experience typical undergraduate MMLL teaching and to find out more about what it's like to be a student here. 

Our next Modern and Medieval Languages Subject Masterclass will take place on Tuesday 17th August, 4:15-6:45pm. This event will include the following two taster sessions:

- Interactive session: ‘Afropean identity in France through films, poems, and translation’, led by Dr Hugo Azerad, Senior Language Teaching Officer, Department of French

- Mini-lecture: Language, literature and the body' by Dr Charlotte Lee, University Senior Lecturer, Department of German

Sutton Trust Summer School

The Sutton Trust Summer Schools are free subject-specific courses for Year 12 (or equivalent) students from UK state-maintained schools. The 5-day summer schools in Cambridge run in July and August, allowing students to explore their interest in one of 22 subjects on offer at the university in gain an insight into what it is like to live and study as a first-year undergraduate student at Cambridge.

The MMLL Sutton Trust Summer School has previously included language taster sessions, workshops and seminars on translation, interpreting literature, film and linguistics, as well as sample lectures in a range of topics that students might typically experience life as an MMLL undergraduate. The 2021 MMLL Summer School will take place online from 26-30 July. Applications for Summer 2021 places have now closed.

The Subject Matters 

The Subject Matters events provide Y10 and Y11 students with an introduction to university life and study, and help them to make informed A level subject choices. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic these events are not being run in the academic year 2020/2021.

Why Not Languages?

Project Overview

'Why Not Languages' is an annual programme of widening participation events and activities, which aims to promote and enhance language learning in schools, and to encourage pupils to continue with their language studies at GCSE, A-Level and at university level. We work in partnership with colleagues at the University’s Language Centre and the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies to create targeted resources and activities for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5.

In response to COVID-19, this year's programme is being run in a slightly different format to previous years. Resources will be available on this website on an ongoing basis for independent use by school teachers and students (see below). In addition, we shall be running targeted online events for Key Stages 4 & 5.

Cambridge Collaborative A level Resources for Languages (CCARL)

Project Overview

CCARL videos have been recorded in the target language on texts set for French and German A levels, primarily to help support sixth form students whose education has been disrupted by remote learning during the Covid pandemic, and as a general resource for teachers.  

These resources have been created by independent researchers and colleagues across an international range of universities, including: Cambridge, UCL, Warwick, Cork, Princeton, Bristol, Reading, Edinburgh, Johns Hopkins, KCL, Queen’s Belfast and Zagreb.
