SLB3: Translation into Russian and Russian through Audio-Visual Media

This paper has two components: Translation from English into Russian and Russian through Audio-visual Media. 

Translation into a foreign language is a challenging but effective tool of learning that language. This Paper will expose you to non-specialised texts of various styles and registers and it will help you to refine the skills necessary to communicate in Russian effectively: accuracy, clarity and flexibility.  Not only will it enable you to master complex grammatical constructions and build up your vocabulary but also encourage you to think about adequacy and appropriateness of expression in written communication. You will focus on the structural differences between the two languages, with  the emphasis on English grammatical constructions which have no exact equivalent in Russian.

Russian through Audio-visual Media

In this component of the paper you will develop your language skills by engaging  with Russian culture. You will concentrate on listening comprehension and writing , and you will watch videos which cover a wide range of  historical and cultural issues in present-day Russian society. 

Aims and objectives: 

By the end of the academic year you should aim to:

  • eliminate basic errors;
  • be able to maintain a high level of accuracy over a range of complex grammatical structures
  • master the ability to compose complex sentences
  • know and observe the essential rules of punctuation
  • build up a wide-ranging vocabulary
  • develop the skill of dealing with vocabulary gaps by employing paraphrase effectively
  • become familiar with linguistic features of various Russian styles and registers and learn to manipulate the language to achieve appropriate stylistic effects. 
Course materials: 

In Translation classes you will be working with extracts from works of different genres as well as well as grammar and vocabulary exercises.

In Audio-visual classes you will be watching video clips from programmes that have been broadcast on various Russian television and internet channels.  

Teaching and learning: 

This Paper will be taught in one fortnightly Translation and one fortnightly Audio-visual class in alternate weeks.

In Translation into Russian (described as Prose Composition in the timetable) texts will be set as a written assignment to be submitted for correction a few days before the class. Your  version will be corrected in advance and selected points will be discussed in class. In addition, there will be exercises dealing with various points of grammar and vocabulary arising out of these texts.

The audio-visual class will involve watching videos and producing written responses to them. The responses will include answers to questions about the factual content, a brief summary and a reasoned engagement with the ideas conveyed in the text. 

Both classes will be conducted in Russian.

Assessment: 

The Translation component of this paper will be assessed in a two-hour examination. You will be presented with two passages in English, of up to 200 words each, which you will be asked to translate into Russian. You may not use dictionaries or other reference materials.

The Audio-visual test will involve watching a video clip of 9-20 minutes duration. The questions on the text will be of the nature outlined above.
