SPAO: Ab initio Spanish Oral

This paper is available for the academic year 2023-24.

This paper aims to help you develop your spoken Spanish through systematic practice. In the Oral supervision you progressively work through the vocabulary and structures that you need in order to handle everyday situations, as well as to discuss topics of a general (non-specialized) nature.

Aims and objectives:

If you complete the set work and participate actively in your oral supervision, by the end of the year you will be able to:

  • Use the vocabulary and structures you have learnt to communicate in everyday situations.
  • Discuss topics of general (non-specialized) interest in Spanish, expressing your own views and reacting to other people’s views.
  • Summarize a non-specialized passage orally.
  • Hold a conversation on any of the topics dealt with during the course.

Course materials:

You will work with the Campus Sur ab initio course book as well as other material provided by your supervisor, including past oral exam passages.

Teaching and learning:

Teaching for this paper takes the form of one weekly one-hour supervision taught by a native speaker. The supervision gives you the opportunity to develop your oral skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Assessment:

This paper is assessed by means of an oral exam, the Oral A (beginners level). The exam itself lasts for 10-12 minutes. You will need to arrive 15 minutes prior to the time of your exam. You will have 15 minutes to prepare a passage on which the exam will be based. At the exam itself you will be asked/expected to:

  • Read aloud a few lines from the passage
  • Summarize the content of the passage
  • Engage in discussion with the examiners on the subject matter of the passage. This includes expressing your own views on the ideas contained in the passage.
